The real reason there hasn't been a terrorist attack on U.S. soil? Who needs men with dynamite strapped to their backs willing to take the hard road to permanently alter the function of our nation when there's people like Bill Frist who'll slowly undo everything bit by bit. It used to be the provenance of conservatism to uphold and guard the established traditions of governance. Nowadays, between threatening to do away with filibusters to countenancing the President's belief that he can interpret the law anyway he wants on a line-by-line basis depending on his mood, there doesn't seem to be a single baby they're unwilling to kick across Constitution Avenue in order to splash around in their kooky bathwater.
Now, according to Glenn Greenwald, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is threatening to do away with the agreed-upon-by-both-parties, thirty year old structure of the Senate Intelligence Committee if the committee dares to do its prescribed job and hold hearings on the domestic wiretapping scandal. Some up-or-down votes are more equal than others, we guess:
Frist specifically threatened that if the Committee holds NSA hearings, he will fundamentally change the 30-year-old structure and operation of the Senate Intelligence Committee so as to make it like every other Committee, i.e., controlled and dominated by Republicans to advance and rubber-stamp the White House?s agenda rather than exercise meaningful and nonpartisan oversight. All of which makes us wonder: do you think Frist has Guy Fawkes on speed-dial? You know, if all else fails?
