They Lied, Children Were Made To Feel Icky.

Here's a term you'll want to learn for the next few weeks: Misprision of felony. Being no legal expert, I couldn't begin to tell you whether there is a statute that could be brought to bear on the members of the Republican leadership who, having full knowledge of a pedophile in their midst, sat by and did nothing--indeed, sat by, did nothing and allow said pedophile TO CHAIR A SUBCOMMITTEE dealing with child endangerment and AUTHOR LAWS pertaining to the prosecution of pedophiles--but even if there isn't, you'll want to keep it around as a handy way of defining precisely what people like Dennis Hastert have done.

18 USC Sec. 4
Chapter 1, Misprision of Felony

Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years or both.

We have one person, Tom Reynolds (R-NY, I believe), who is on record as saying that he specifically informed Dennis Hastert about Foley gettin' all NAMBLA with another page. The ROLL CALL article, spells out a number of people who knew about Foley, but is far more damning in what it has to say about the man who wasn't told--Dale Kildee, the lone Democrat on the page board. If this was a matter brought to the page board, then Kildee was entitled to know about it. That he didn't know word one about any of this until Friday afternoon can only mean one thing--his being misinformed was a purposeful action and the product of a criminal conspiracy to shield a known criminal from the law.

A lot of people have a lot to answer for. But, Jesus, there's nothing exactly NEW about that, is there?

I agree that what the guy did was pretty sick, but technically he's not a pedophile. Still sick, but not a pedophile.

Good post, but the word is "misprision" (rhymes with "vision").

Thanks, KC. I actually found it spelled both ways in two different places, and, in a lamentable instance of dumbing something down, made the decision to go with -prison instead of -prison, thinking it would be more likely I'd get comments from people thinking I spelled it wrong the other way. Oh, me of little faith. I'll go ahead and change it.

This is sort of quintessential Federal malfescence, isn't it? The act in question wasn't jailable, per se. The act of lying about it up WAS. Has Washington learned nothing from Libby's example?

And, DCeiver, I am sure you spelled it better than our Scum-bag-and-chief could have. Nice one.

have you seen the new claim that he's now an alcoholic?! since when does alcoholism and pedophilia equal the same thing? what the hell?

I don't think Foley committed a felony so Hastert should be in the clear.

But we should be pretty psyched that the Republicans gave Democrats an actual sex scandal! The public actually cares about this crap! Now we can Lewinsky these bastards out of office.
